The Rhododendron Lane is starting to bloom again. This is the perfect time to walk or cycle through this beautiful lane. Discover this stunning spot in the municipality of Losser.
Rhododendron Lane
One of the gems of the Treasure Chest of Twente is Rhododendron Lane at the Scholtenhaer estate, a unique lane in De Lutte. You can enter this lane (also by bike) through narrow gates, and it is at its most beautiful from April to June. During this period, most rhododendrons typically bloom for about four weeks—a true feast for the eyes! You’ll be amazed by the colorful display of flowers in white, red, and purple. The lane seems endless, lined with rhododendrons up to 2½ meters tall. Bumblebees and bees are abundant here as well.
The name Rhododendron comes from ancient Greek. Rhodos means rose, while Dendron translates to tree—literally, “rose tree.”
Scottish Highlanders
The lane features several beautiful viewpoints. About halfway along, there is a barn and a pasture where Scottish Highlanders, a reddish-brown cattle breed, graze. These are impressive animals with long hair, large horns, and long eyelashes. However, it’s rare to look them directly in the eyes due to their wild “60s-style” hair! With some luck, you might spot calves as well.
There is also a small lookout tower covered in clematis. It’s fun to climb and perfect for taking “drone-style” photos from above.
Cycling Route
At the Tourist Info, you can pick up the 25-kilometer Rhododendron cycling route. Along this route, you’ll see rhododendrons in the Rhododendron Lane, around the villa on the Hakenberg, and in the Arboretum Poort Bulten in De Lutte. During the blooming season, this makes for double the enjoyment!
