Babette’s Feast The screenplay for this 1987 film is based on the novella of the same name by Karen Blixen. In 1988, the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Film critics praised Babette’s Feast as a film of unparalleled quality.

The story is set in the 19th century in a remote, strictly religious village on the coast of Jutland. Two devout sisters, the daughters of the late pastor, lead an extremely modest life.

One day, a mysterious French refugee named Babette arrives. She becomes the sisters’ housekeeper. Fourteen years later, Babette wins the lottery (a Parisian friend had renewed her ticket every year). As a gesture of gratitude and to celebrate the pastor’s 100th birthday, she decides to spend all the money on an extravagant French dinner.

The dinner brings warmth, forgiveness and an evening that will be remembered for many years to come.
