Located at the river “De Dinkel” and hidden in a hilly landscape lies Beuningen. A church, a bar, a dirt road through the corn, farms and some lifestock. It looks like time stood still.

History

Around the year 1100 Beuningen was known as Boninge. Since 1148 variants like Boninghen, Boninchen, Boningem and Boninghem appeared. -Chen, -hem and -him means house; So the name means something like “house of” or “descendant from” Bono. It is Baniningi that probably appeared around the year 900, it is the older form of Boninge. At first Beuningen was part of Denekamp, but in 1817 Beuningen became part of the municipality of Losser.

Scenic Nature

In Beuningen you can bike and hike along colorful fields and farmyards. The winding river “De Dinkel” is one of the few naturally meandering rivers in The Netherlands. Bird watchers can spot the most beautiful birds here, like the rare kingfisher, the sand martin and the great yellow wagtail. You prefer something bigger? Watch the poles in the meadows very carefully. Hawks and buzzards like to rest here during their hunt.

Manufacturers villa’s

Textile manufacturers bought around the year 1900 a lot of wastelands in the region. After some development the most beautiful country houses, forests and parks arose. The building- and scenery style were copied from England. The Dutch gentleman stayed in England on a regular basis due to the import of weaving machines. You won’t find this many young estates, in a relatively small area, anywhere else in The Netherlands. In Beuningen are two of this estates: “De Borg” and “De Hakenberg”.
